Black ditch is wildlife haven

AS A resident of Littlehampton, born and bred, I have enjoyed from childhood and even today the green and open spaces of the Brooks, which is what we have always called the area north of the railway.

This has the Black Ditch running through it, with an abundance of water and wildlife, birds too numerous to mention and especially the cuckoo – when they arrive in this country, you only have to go to the Black Ditch and you will hear the cuckoo call.

I guess there must be some Littlehampton residents who don't know that just a few minutes' walk from the town that piece of country space is there, but for how much longer?

It was a big relief to hear Littlehampton Town Council turned down the development plans – just think what it would be like to have all that space covered with buildings and roads.

It would always be flooded, you only have to go over there now and you walk through water. There is not only the Black Ditch but other streams that branch from it.

Where would all the wildlife go? They have no choice and cannot fight back. An example of that is with the new development at Worthing Road and Toddington. The foxes are having to find new homes amongst the buildings.

It would be disastrous if developers took all that away. Just think of that flyover road crossing the railway – it would look horrendous.

So please, town council, hold your ground and keep the developers out.
