Blow for allotments

IN February all Rother allotment holders received a rather ambiguous letter from the district council which seemed to suggest it could no longer afford the service.

Since then allotment holders have been attempting to meet with council officers with no success.

Now there is a further blow to allotment holders. The government is conducting a Review of the Statutory Duties of Local Authorities and the provision of allotments is one of the duties which is being considered.

The government consultation ends on Easter Monday, April 25, and it is important that allotment holders let their feelings on this matter be known.

They should write to local MP, Greg Barker, at his constituency office, 6A Amherst Road, Bexhill-on-Sea, TN40 1QJ or at the House of Commons, Westminster, London SW1A 0AA. E-mail: [email protected]

Direct replies to the government should be e-mailed to: [email protected] or posted to: Review of Statutory Burdens Team, DCLG 3/H6 Eland House, Bressenden Place, London SW1E 5DU

It is disappointing that the council did not feel it necessary to alert allotment holders to this additional threat.
