Could this be the reason for so much interest and the high turnout?

The public knew that this time each vote counted, was meaningful, and would give a true reflection of opinion.

I would suggest this is a huge endorsement of the need for a proportional representation system.

It is also very notable that the map showed those voting Remain were in London and the M4 (to Bath and Bristol) and M23 (Brighton) corridors, which are possibly the areas of affluence not effected by austerity
