Brexit: We may face much to moan about

The referendum gave results which showed a virtually evenly divided nation.

A 48-52 vote is obviously not a clear and overwhelming win. If you take the 52 per cent vote as a percentage of the electorate, it is 39 per cent of the population.

For a minority government (25 per cent of the electorate) to then pursue a great U-turn in the UK policy merely emphasises the point I try to make that our electoral system has imperfections which could easily be ironed out and given a more, and better, representative position.

No, Mr Haslett (Letters, October 20), I am not a remoaner, but I worry that those persuaded to vote Brexit will have much to moan about if we leave the EU trade area.

NB. If we had a written constitution, a major change would almost certainly contain a clause needing at least a 2/3rds majority.
