Cabbages, chrysanthemums and cars at Capel’s biggest ever show

Chris Coke, chairman of Capel Horticultural Society, said: “Considering the weather conditions over the summer months I have been delighted at the high quality of the horticultural exhibits this year as well as the record breaking number of entries.”

Robert Astrop won 5 of the top horticultural prizes, including the Royal Horticultural Society’s Bronze Medal for the most meritorious exhibit in cut flowers and pot plants, whilst Chris Coke won the coveted Banksian Medal as the overall winner of horticultural classes. Sam Jenks won 4 awards including the National Vegetable Society Medal for the most meritorious vegetable exhibit (see results below)

Capel Show offered something for everybody – the youngsters enjoyed a puppet show as well as getting up close to sheep and rabbits. There were more new stalls than ever before as well as the regulars offering good food, tea and cakes. This year there were almost 600 classic cars and bikes on display.

Mandy Schryver, who organises all that goes on in the showground, said: ” We think this was a vintage year and definitely our best show yet. New exhibitors included Parrot Rescue, several artisan stalls and Wheels for Heroes from the Princess of Wales Regiment. The fun dog show had double the entries of the previous year. Even a rain shower could not dampen spirits, everybody had so much fun.”
