Campaign support

GLAD to see the article (Gazette, August 2) proving that the Don’t Split the Town Show campaign is non-political and highlighted that Lynda Grant’s letter in the same paper was misguided, misleading and untrue when she claimed that the campaign was just a political gesture by the local Labour Party.

The facts are that the campaign is genuinely cross-party and overwhelmingly publicly supported. On Saturday, July 26, town councillors Malcolm Belchamber (independent) and Dr James Walsh (Liberal Democrat) joined Labour supporters collecting signatures in the precinct.

Also supporting the campaign is Alan Humphrey, of the Town Show committee, with the unanimous backing of this year’s annual town meeting.

On top of this, numerous Conservative supporters and past councillors have signed the ever-growing petition, which is now available in more than 20 outlets, from shops to businesses, to clubs and organisations, with many places displaying posters.

At the time of writing this letter, there more than 750 signatures on the petition from disgruntled residents and over 1,500 likes on the Facebook page.

So you can gather, the message coming across very clear and passionately from the local community is “Don’t split the Town Show”, and, dare I suggest, that in order to save money, as Ms Grant wants, don’t waste it on a static bandstand with limited benefits located on a weather-dependent seafront and leave the very popular Town Show and Family Fun Day in its well-attended annual format, on Rosemead Park, in early September.
