Canadian soldiers used café as cinema

SEEING the letters (Gazette, July 2 and 9) regarding the Bungalow Café, which used to stand at the south end of Beach Road, Littlehampton, I wonder if there are others who can remember the months heading up to D-Day, when the Canadian soldiers used the café as their mess hall and, later in the day, it became a cinema?

I was about 10 years old then and it was the done thing to hang about outside with your friends, looking forlorn, hoping that a kind soldier would say: "Do you want to come in and see the movie, boys?"

The show always started with a sing-song, followed by the main feature, which, surprise, surprise, was usually an early John Wayne western, or war film.
