Cart before the horse

These roads are no more dangerous than most others. Although there will be some exceptions, the majority of accidents are caused by drivers, not roads.

According to your report the Little Common Road crash involved two vehicles meeting head-on, which prompts the question - why? At least one of the drivers must have been at fault.

The second incident at the London Road cross-roads appears from your photograph to have been a head-on collision also, although this isn’t stated in the report. If this is so, there must again have been driver error.

During the course of my 15,000 miles a year driving I witnessed countless cases of poor, bad and downright dangerous driving.

There were the more elderly drivers whose physical and mental reactions were not as sharp as they used to be; there were the young (mostly male) drivers whose car was an extension of their, shall we say, masculinity, and who wanted to demonstrate how much faster than the rest of us they could drive, and there were the in-between age group who were just bad drivers.

Obviously, good drivers do exist in all three categories. These people drive according to their own limitations, the traffic conditions and the the weather conditions. They are also patient and courteous towards other road users.

When everybody drives this way we shall hear no more about “dangerous roads”.
