Cash conscious

NICK Wiltshire was not defending bankers (Gazette letters, July 15), rather he was attacking the crass position that Labour politicians have adopted since the general election of denying that the dire financial position in which this country finds itself has anything to do with them.

Not all that Labour did was bad, but Alan Butcher (Gazette letters, July 22) is mistaken in thinking that everything Labour had introduced could actually continue; it couldn't, because, as the letter stated, the money had run out.

Even Alastair Darling had already planned for cuts and a rise in VAT to 20 per cent to be introduced.

The coalition government was formed by two parties to clear up the mess after Labour's party.

However, in just 10 weeks since its formation, the Liberal Democrats have exerted a huge influence over the government's agenda.

Going into the general election the Liberal Democrats made clear that they had four key priorities: fairer taxes; a fair start for children with extra funding for disadvantaged pupils; a comprehensive clean-up of politics, including a fairer voting system; and a green, sustainable economy.

The delivery of these and other Lib Dem policies and pledges will now begin to make a real, positive difference to people's lives because of Liberal Democrat involvement in the coalition government.

The Liberal Democrats promised to make the tax system fairer by ensuring no one pays tax on the first 10,000 they earn and closing loopholes that allow the wealthy to pay a smaller proportion of their income in tax than people on low and middle incomes.

The coalition government has committed to this by raising the income tax threshold by 1,000 from next April with an increase every year during this Parliament.

Included in a host of other Lib Dem policies that will now happen under the coalition government will be fairer pensions, by restoring the earnings link, as well as the restoration of freedoms and civil liberties eroded under Labour, by scrapping the costly ID card scheme.

There is no Labour "Plan B"; this coalition government must be allowed to work to succeed for the future prosperity of our country.
