Charity receives £900 boost from church

The funds of a local charity, which creates work for adults with learning disabilities and helps them develop their skills for employment in the wider world, has been given a nearly £1000 boost.

The gift to the Horsham-based Butterfly Project of £900 was made by the town’s Unitarian Church, which raised the money from a highly successful fayre staged in their city-centre Church Gardens premises.

The event was a resurrection of a long-dormant, annual country fête first staged by the Church way back in the ‘fifties.

The Church’s gardens officer, Teresa Ramsden, said: “After the Project’s splendid transformation of our garden we felt that they deserved our support, and we’re thrilled that, with the promotion of the occasion by the local press and the good attendance, we managed to raise what we did.”

In the town the Butterfly Project boasts a workshop making a wide range of wood and metalwork, a studio, and a retail outlet at 31 Springfield Road - all bases for their work and skills-based activities for the over-18s.

Among other activities they are currently quoting Southwater Parish Council to supply wooden planters to adorn the village’s Lintott Square.

The number of their trainees has grown rapidly in the last eighteen months, so the project would welcome more work offers - anything from paper rounds to garden gate manufacture.
