Cliff study is not political

E & S Gladman (letters 2 May) write about reports in your paper concerning the Fairlight Cliffs. The position is that Rother District Council, with much help from the Fairlight Preservation Trust (a registered charity), has applied to the Environment Agency for funding of a detailed geotechnical study of the area between the Sea Road and Rockmead Road berms. Such a study would assess the situation, review the options, identify a way forward and produce a viable coastal protection scheme.

I would like to assure Mr and Mrs Gladman that this is not a party political issue. Amber Rudd MP, like Sara Owen, has met a concerned resident and a representative of the FPT and is very helpful. Her predecessor, Michael Foster MP, earned the respect of all for his support over similar issues. It is essential that there is the maximum possible support across the board to bring the necessary works to completion.

This matter will be discussed at the Fairlight Parish Assembly on Friday 30 May. There will be an opportunity for all parishioners to hear about and discuss the latest position. In the meantime I am sure any parish councillor or trustee of the FPT would be happy to talk to residents – contact details are on notice boards and the Fairlight Village Website.
