Thank you for your regular, informative reporting of the proposed closure of Rumboldswhyke Infants School and now, apparently and sadly, its demise.

The handling of this issue does little to enhance the reputation of West Sussex County Council. The treatment of children, parents, staff and the school’s governing body and supporters reads like elements of a Victorian novel.

The cabinet shows scant respect for opposing views voiced by councillors and, by extension, members of the local community.

Perhaps Tony Kershaw, director of law, could be asked whether he gave timely and appropriate information on call-in rules and conditions to those opposed to closure.

Moreover, it was unfortunate that the spokesman’s follow-up statement had the defensive tone of an explanation provided by a public body feeling threatened by unwanted scrutiny.

I commend the integrity, determination and democratic understanding shown by councillors opposing the closure. These are people needed in 21st century local politics, embedded in their communities and having respect for views expressed by local people.

As a grandparent of children who previously attended Rumboldswhyke, I could not have asked for them to receive a better introduction to formal education and induction to school life.

In the event of closure, I hope there will be a public celebration of the life of this great little school.

This could be an opportunity to honour the dedication and effectiveness of staff past and present, the governors and supporters of the school.

It would also provide a meeting point for children, parents and families to show their appreciation of the education, love, kindness and social wellbeing the school has provided.
