Collyer’s students get snapshot into photography at career day

The Collyer’s photography department welcomed industry professionals and graduates to speak to their students about higher education study and pursuing a career in the Photographic industries.

Daniel Alexander, course leader Photography BA (Hons) at The University of Portsmouth was joined by Georgie Gillard, a Daily Mail Press photographer and Stephanie Pickering, an ex-Collyer’s A-Level student and recent Portsmouth University Photography graduate.

The guest speakers presented to over 45 students during the day’s talks and spent time giving one-to-one advice and guidance.

The day of talks formed part of the department’s summer enrichment activities which helps to prepare students for their A-level study, progression onto degrees and pursuing job opportunities.

Documentary photographer and course leader Daniel Alexander’s presentation focused on the Photography degree at The University of Portsmouth. He gave invaluable advice about what to expect at degree interviews and the skills students need to develop in order to be successful.

Daniel Alexander said: “The facilities at Collyer’s are incredibly impressive and so are their students.”

Press Photographer for the Daily Mail, Georgie Gillard wowed students with her work. Georgie explained the importance of work experience and entering competitions as it helps gain exposure within the industry.

Hard work and tenacity along with talent secured her a traineeship at the national newspaper, which lead to a full-time position.

Georgie showed the students her Team Great Britain portraits taken at last summer’s Olympic Games as well as her coverage and front page feature taken at the Paralympics.

Photography student Rob Legg was thrilled: “Seeing Georgie Gillard’s photography was incredible. She has shown us it is possible to be successful in a competitive industry”.

Georgie was equally impressed with the students: “I have had a fantastic day today. All the students were attentive and enthusiastic. The variety and quality of work I have seen in the photography department is phenomenal.”

Stephanie Pickering, who gained an A* in A-Level Photography at Collyer’s spoke about her experiences within the photography department and how they prepared her well for university study.

Stephanie showed the students her project work and encouraged them to continue to photograph not only for their coursework but for pleasure too.

Student Emily Clark said: “Today has been eye opening. I have seen someone who was a student like me fulfil their ambition and become a successful photographer.”

Subject leader for photography, Laura Andrews, added: “Thank you so much to Daniel, Georgie and Stephanie for taking time out of their busy schedules to come and visit us today. Their enthusiasm and passion for their work has been truly inspiring. It has been a wonderful opportunity for our students and will help them with future projects and progression.”
