‘Comfy it ain’t’

IT was with some sinking of my heart that I read about the Long Bench at Littlehampton getting not one, but two “prestigious awards” (Gazette, March 8).

Arun District Council cabinet mmeber Norman Dingemans is pictured in the paper perched on the edge of said bench, proudly displaying the awards and speaking about Littlehampton’s bench being “up against some of the best architects in the world”. Since when did architects become experts on what makes suitable seating?

Apparently, the seat is popular with people who have bought slats with their personal messages engraved onto them, and there is no doubt that the Long Bench is an exciting and interesting piece of architectural sculpture – but, comfy it ain’t.

The designers have gone for looks and not practicality. What good is a seat you can’t relax into and enjoy sitting on for more than a few minutes?

I’m pretty sure the money could have been better spent on some traditional wooden seats with backs to lean on, and wide slats that don’t pinch your bum.
