Consider lower speed limit

The A2100 at Telham has now claimed a second life in as many months, both of which have been on the road between Breadsell Lane and the Citroen garage at Telham.

This stretch of road has seen numerous accidents and deaths over the years and now with these latest fatalities, it makes it one of the most dangerous roads in East Sussex.

The stretch of road from Banntynes roundabout to the Citroen garage at Telham is approximately 0.75 of a mile in distance and is the only section of road on the A2100 between Battle and Hastings that has a national speed limit of 60mph.

Therefore, it has a tendency to encourage drivers to put their foot down and overtake in a rush to beat the traffic to the next 40mph reduction in speed limit sign.

Now, whilst I am not citing speed as the cause of these latest fatalities, I do have to regretfully say that I myself have seen many incidents of overtaking in dangerous places along this relatively short section of fast road and I wonder how long it will be before there is another unnecessary accident, or even worse, another fatality along this road.

I am a resident in Breadsell Lane, which is halfway along this road and every time I turn left or right, I regularly check and check again as to where the traffic is, as on many occasions I have seen cars overtaking, oblivious to any potential traffic emerging from this lane onto the fast flowing A2100.

Personally, I do not see the need to have a short section of road with such a high speed limit and I would encourage East Sussex highways to seriously consider lowering the speed limit to 40mph for the whole length, with double white lines in places to prevent temptation to overtake, thus making it a safe and continuous 40mph all the way from Bannatynes to Telham.
