Continental style is tough for many

WHILE sitting at home with a cup of coffee and looking for items to include in the next recording of the Adur Talking News (December 4), I was amazed to read the letter from Barry J. Mishon who writes about someone in the county council suggesting that people remove all tables etc., from outside their cafés/restaurants in Shoreham.

I'm sure this "someone" must have been abroad to at least some of the places quoted and also seen the very wide pavements, squares and piazzas which are so suitable for such an arrangement.

I agree that it is very nice to sit outside with a cappuccino, espresso or whatever, but in the narrow streets of Shoreham the tables and chairs cause a big problem for some people.

Mr Mishon obviously doesn't have a sight problem and doesn't always read the Herald, or he would have seen the article last year where David Steadman, Tim Loughton MP, and Clive Williams walked through the town with Pat Marshall of 4sight and Ginny Worman with guide dog Max, who were able to demonstrate how difficult it is for people with sight impairment to negotiate all the obstacles on the pavements.

If Mr Mishon or any other interested parties would like to experience what it is like to walk the streets with a sight impairment, Pat Marshall at 4sight '“ the West Sussex Association for the Blind '“ on 01273 454343, will be pleased to arrange this for them.
