Councillors need to be heard

I have been in the public gallery at several recent Arun District Council meetings and am dismayed by the lack of 'microphone awareness' shown by some councillors.

These are desktop microphones, so as soon as a speaker leans back, or even stands up, they are inaudible to the public gallery, including some with hearing aids switched to the “loop” in the chamber.

Our shouts of “we can’t hear you” serve to irritate members, interrupt the debates and are not always taken on board.

Perhaps councillors could be reminded at the start of all publicly attended meetings that democracy needs to be heard to be done as well as seen.
