Crossing needed

I TOOK my two boys for a walk from Bognor to Littlehampton with the intention of staying on the beach for the rest of the day.

When we reached the West Bank, I was informed that it was about a mile to walk to the bridge over the river and then to the beach.

We gave up and got the train back to Bognor.

Why is there no ferry or bridge for people to cross over nearer the beach?

I can only assume that Littlehampton is losing revenue by this.
