MAY I congratulate Roger Green on his excellent article (Gazette, April 7) in respect of the very welcome initiative of Littlehampton Town Council in deciding to proceed with the erection of “20 is plenty” signs in Littlehampton?

I have advised Rustington Parish Council of Mr Green’s article, with the request that its members consider liaison with the town council, as there are a number of roads in Rustington that would benefit from similar treatment.

I am also advising the chairman of the Joint Eastern Arun Area Committee, county councillor Peter Evans, that, at its forthcoming meeting on June 14, it will be my intention to request that an invitation be given to the town council to provide a representative to address members on the scheme which, if further implemented, could have far-reaching benefits for the county.

Kenneth Grimes,

Broadmark Avenue,

Rustington

Editor’s note: for the sake of accuracy, it should be pointed out that the signs in Littlehampton won’t carry the “20 is plenty” slogan, as, according to Littlehampton town clerk Peter Herbert, “it sends hackles rising” among county highways staff. The signs will be “advisory”, but not legally enforceable.
