Deserving of recognition

I feel I must put pen to paper with regard to your recent article (July 24) about the open day in the Bexhill Ophthalmic Day Surgery unit.

The staff, under the supervision of the Matron Lesley Carter, put in a lot of hard work in the preparation, before, during and after this event, some coming in on their days off and annual leave. I, as a volunteer, served refreshments to the 104 visitors.

A large number of patients are dealt with in this department, both for surgery and pre-assessment, on a weekly basis by a team of dedicated staff and surgeons, so I was a little surprised to see the report in your paper consisted of one photograph of some League of Friends volunteers and five lines to accompany the picture.

I thought the day warranted more than what you published as it was a first for the department/hospital and would make the staff feel appreciated for their work on the day.

Visitors where asked to complete a feedback questionnaire about their experience on the day, the overall review implied they were extremely impressed, staff very helpful and liked seeing the equipment up close.

One visitor said ‘the open session was excellent and perhaps other hospitals should do the same, they found the information and help of the nurses very interesting’.
