Development threat

WHEN the Dell estate was built 30 years ago, the size of Angmering increased by 50 per cent, as the number of houses rose from 2,200 to 3,200 and the development of Bramley Green in the early 2000s added another 650 houses, enlarging the village by a further 27 per cent.

Angmering is now under threat from further development, with the prospect of up to 700 more houses being built on the land between Roundstone Lane and the Angmering bypass.

Barratts/David Wilson Homes are proposing to erect 301 houses on Manor Nurseries and fields to the south of that site and Worthing Rugby Club has stated that it will move from its present site in Roundstone Lane if another local site can be found, opening up the possibility of a further 200 houses.

Now Humber Growers Ltd (VHB) has announced it is submitting a formal request for pre-application advice to Arun District Council to commence a dialogue regarding the potential development of its site for residential use. This could mean a further 200-odd houses between Roundstone Lane and the bypass.

A poll was held recently in Angmering to determine whether residents were in favour of further large-scale development in the village. Out of the 5,882 villagers on the electoral roll, 2,261 responded (38.4 per cent) and of these 99.7 per cent (2,254) voted a resounding NO.

These results were presented to Angmering Parish Council at its recent meeting, as reported in your paper. However, the council decided to sit on the fence, even though it is not the planning authority and can only lodge an objection, as can any ordinary citizen. It is time that villagers’ views are listened to and taken into account.

If these developments go ahead, they will have a detrimental effect on Angmering and the surrounding area. They will result in increased traffic not only through the village, but in the local area especially on the A259. Angmering schools, the doctors’ surgery, water supplies and the sewerage system will not be able to cope and it could have an adverse impact on the natural drainage of the area.

In addition, there will be a loss of local jobs, with the closure of the businesses in Roundstone Lane.

I would implore all residents of Angmering and any other interested parties to support the Save Angmering Village campaign and when formal planning applications are submitted, to write a letter of objection details of which will be available on the Save Angmering Village website (www.saveangmering.co.uk)
