Did the ministry turn a blind eye?

Behind every health minister there is a cabinet and loads of civil servants / under secretaries and yet not one of these hosts of supposedly astute persons identified the loss of taxpayers’ money to the blue EHIC (European Health Insurance Card).

This enables foreigners that might have only had a cross-Channel day trip, to get the card, return to their own country and claim ‘free’ treatment, paid by our NHS; this could be any treatment costing thousands of pounds.

This has been going on for years so all past and present governments must hang their heads in shame and it would be appropriate that, as they allowed our money to be scammed away, then they should dig into their own lavish pockets to repay our lost money that could amount to billions.

Even the government 2012 report underestimated the annual cost to be £2bn and the NHS reckons that they have paid out at least £721m over the last five years though are unsure how much of this was claimed by foreigners using their UK EHIC.

Our precious NHS is the fifth biggest employer in the world, ahead of even the state -owned Chinese energy network though behind Walmart and McDonald’s so, on the one hand one might say that errors could easily get lost in the system while on the other it could be argued that within the vast number of employees there must have been many whistle-blowers that brought the scam to their bosses and ultimately the government health ministerial department.

If they did then why did the government not act?

The whole issue reeks of continual incompetence by the government in power and at the very least the ministry of health turning a blind eye to the evidence that was freely available.
