Disgusted by pub's behaviour

I READ with great interest, your article regarding The Lamb choosing to ban a customer from wearing his German football shirt in the pub (Gazette, July 8).

As it happens, I was actually at the Lamb for the England match against the USA, and I happened to overhear the conversation between the customer and the landlady.

In fact, the landlady made a point of being so loud that it was difficult not to overhear it.

The landlady made it very clear that this customer would not be welcome back in the pub wearing his German football shirt as it was offensive.

I could tell that the whole situation was incredibly embarrassing for the customer, and indeed, it was embarrassing for everyone in the near vicinity who overheard it, and I noticed that a general silence followed the incident.

At the time, the customer was not aggressive but, rightly so, he did say that he would not be told what he could and couldn't wear.

I was so disgusted by the way that this was handled that I actually left the pub immediately and I have not returned since.

In addition, if the landlady is concerned about escalating violence, then I would suggest that she has some training in how to manage situations of conflict, as the manner in which she speaks to the customers is more likely to inflame tempers rather than calm them.

I was pleased to see in another article, that the German exchange students received a warmer welcome at The Angmering School.
