Doing a fine job

ON Thursday, we took our grandson for a walk around Harbour Park and along the harbour to the beach. Suddenly I spotted a young gull, obviously caught on something along the harbour wall.

I am no fan of gulls, but the thought of it dying slowly by drowning as the tide came in was upsetting to my wife. I went over to the lifeguards' station and asked if they rescued gulls as well as people – and they did!

In a matter of minutes, armed with towel and gloves, they waded out and freed the bird, which had been hooked in the beak.

This shows the dangers of fishermen using hooks, although they are banned.

The guards took it in their stride, but obviously do a sterling job rescuing humans and animals. Well done!
