Drained by it all

My daughter attended a meeting of Arun District Council’s development control committee a couple of weeks ago, in connection with the plans for former shop premises at 135 Wick Street to be converted into flats.

She was duly given three minutes to speak, for which we thank the council.

However when she requested that the question of adequate drainage provision be investigated, this request was summarily dismissed as being of no consequence. Given that Arun spends thousands of pounds every year clearing blocked drains, we expected her request to be given consideration. I now realise this is why so much money is spent on blocked drains! Isn’t this what forward planning is supposed to be about?

I was born at 135 Wick Street and my father built the shop in 1931. I feel sorry for the people who will be squashed into such small flats, (but of course they will not be developers or councillors!).

I realise that it might be hard for a shop to make a living on these premises, but believe that the property is suitable for only two flats. Then again, does Wick really need flats in the middle of a shopping area?
