Drivers in need of more training

THE recent snowy weather has given me the opportunity to observe standards of driving as vehicles pass my house.

It seems to me that some drivers have no idea how to tackle icy road conditions, and probably have reached only the minimum standard required to drive a vehicle, i.e., only passed their driving test and nothing else.

I wonder how many have had enough pride in their driving to go on to take Pass Plus, or advanced driver training, or even gone to Goodwood and paid for a four-hour course on the skidpan?

In my opinion, all these are essential for safe driving today and perhaps should be made mandatory for all drivers.

It is quite possible that the weather we are getting at present will be the norm for future winters.

Perhaps future governments should legislate that drivers who have the minimum qualification of just the basic driving test pass should not be allowed on the road in wintry conditions such as prevail at the moment?
