Earth Hour: switch off lights

EARTH Hour is organized by WWF, one of the largest and most respected independent conservation organisations. WWF's mission is to stop the degradation of the Earth's natural environment and build a future where people live in harmony with nature.

Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000 businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change.

By 2010 Earth Hour became 128 countries and territories joined in the global display of climate action.

Iconic buildings and landmarks from Asia Pacific to Europe and Africa to the Americas switched off. People across the world from all walks of life turned off their lights and came together in celebration and contemplation of the one thing we all have in common – our planet.

In Bexhill, Earth Hour 2011 will take place on Saturday, March 26 at 8.30pm. At this time, we all need to turn out our lights for one hour as a sign that we need to tackle climate change.

Bexhill Environmental Group has gone online to say how it is going to go beyond the hour to make a difference. Log on to: beyondthehour.org , click on “find”, type “Bexhill-on-Sea” in the city box, and read our Bexhill Environmental Group story.

Bexhill Observer readers can choose to go beyond the hour themselves by committing to an action, big or small, that they will sustain for the future of our planet.
