We have all been appalled at the scenes on TV and in the papers of the huge amounts of litter left by mainly young people in parks and other public spaces around the country.

Unfortunately Eastbourne has its fair share of litter bugs too.

On several occasions including on Easter Saturday afternoon I have seen lots of rubbish, mainly bottles and crisp packets, strewn all over the grass bank behind the new skate park on the seafront by Sovereign Park.

This is despite the fact that at least eight litter bins have been placed around the site.

The selfish and thoughtless kids, mainly nine-13 year-old boys by the look of them, who regularly trash the area clearly have no sense of social responsibility and whatever education they have had from their parents and schools, if any, has had little impact on their behaviour.

One option would be to regularly close the skate park until the kids themselves pick up the rubbish and put it in the bins provided and keep doing so until they get the message they have a responsibility to keep the place clean.

I assume council workers or volunteers are regularly out clearing up the mess left by these kids but continuing to do so is like trying to mop water off the floor whilst the taps are still running.

It doesn’t solve the problem.

Instead those who trash the place should face consequences of their anti-social behaviour, their skate park is frequently closed.

How else will they learn to respect the environment?
