Employ some common sense

ESCC Highways are to be congratulated on at last resurfacing Marley Lane from the level crossing to the mini-roundabout at the southern end.

However, it has been marred by stopping the double yellow lines 50m short of the level crossing!

What a short sighted, penny pinching lack of common sense approach by the specification writers at County Hall.

Unfortunately, the Highway Code only tells motorists not to park ‘on the approach’ to a level crossing (para 243) and is therefore open to misinterpretation.

I walk in Marley Lane every day and at least 50 per cent of the time a car is parked on the southern side about 30m from the barriers, facing up the hill, the motorist obviously thinking he’s got away with free parking whilst travelling on the railway.

This lack of common sense attitude causes major delays when the barriers are raised and the traffic tries to flow.

Come on highway engineers, display some common sense yourselves and continue the double yellow lines!
