End nasty personal jibes at councillors

Local elections are looming and electioneering is appearing in its usual dichotomy of guises. Sometimes it is honest and straightforward and sometimes it is subversive and spiteful.

For myself, I always think it is shameful when candidates stoop to making sly, nasty digs at their council colleagues in the press in an attempt to discredit them.

We are, after all, supposed to be a team, working for the greater good of those who elected us.

In the four years that I have been a member of Rye Town Council I have not only learned masses about how a council operates, but have also come to hold in high regard the integrity, dedication and loyalty of senior councillors and most certainly that of Cllr Sam Souster.

I am therefore, aggrieved to see that councillor’s good name and intentions questioned and mocked in last weeks Observer’s letters.

I sincerely hope that this is the last such letter I see written by a colleague during the run up to elections.

CLLR Bernardine Fiddimore

Rye Town Councillor.
