Envoking memories of Littlehampton's Whispering Smith

Having him writing a column is an asset and sells newspapers. Long may his thoughts and imagination fly.

I remember him as a school boy in Rustington and he was cheeky then. I don’t agree with his views on the modernisation of the local churches.

As a committed Christian and historian, I believe the buildings have to adapt to society’s demands. The Church is to the people a living, breathing entity and if it’s allowed to develop it will be of benefit to all.

Through the medium of your paper, I would like to thank the people of the Littlehampton district and to tell them what a wonderful part of the world they live in.

I was born in Rustington and my four siblings still reside in the Gazette area.

Our father owned Rockalls the electrical shop. His father was a tailor in Cornwall Road, Littlehampton. I emigrated to Australia in 1965, but my longing for the sea and river has stayed with me.

I find the climate pleasant after the harshness down under. The spectacular scenery of the South Downs and friendly people, eateries etc are an asset.

My only criticism is the traffic congestion,but with people wanting to live here that’s inevitable.

The festivals and floral displays are a joy. Hard working volunteers are the community’s heart and soul. Well done.
