Error of shelters

IT was a terrible mistake to remove the two very practical brick-built shelters from the Littlehampton Promenade.

They were cleverly designed to provide comfortable seating and shelter from wind and rain from any direction and all they needed was to be spruced up to the standard of the identical ones located adjacent to the lighthouse and the toilet block.

The Promenade shelter opposite Littlehampton Swimming and Sports Centre is badly in need of a facelift, such as upvc roof fascias and eaves boarding, re-varnishing of the seats, etc.

This particular shelter also provides cover from the rain while waiting at the nearby bus stop.

Unfortunately, I now see that there is a current planning application to convert it into a kite surfing centre.

I am certainly not alone in thinking that the new so-called shelters on the Promenade are totally impractical.

The main aim of the architect seems to have been the creation of an ultra-modern sculptural design above all else.

I noticed that almost immediately after the protective barriers were removed, children were climbing over the zany helter-skelter-like seats.

Obviously there is a real danger here of children falling onto the newly-laid hard surface below, with the possibility of causing serious injury, something which should have been anticipated by the designers and local authorities concerned, including the health and safety authority.
