Many families in Bexhill will be shocked to know that East Sussex County Council, which provides subsidy funding for the Cygnets Nursery at Egerton Park and the Rainbow Nursery in Sidley, is withdrawing their funding on 31 December 2020 (Bexhill Observer, July 24). This news was reported at the recent Rother District Council (RDC) Cabinet meeting last Monday (July 27) .

The loss of this essential support to all families in Bexhill, the disruption or absence of nursery places for the 164 children that will need to find alternative nursery provision and the potential loss of 18 jobs should not be allowed to go unnoticed.

It is clear from the report made to the RDC Cabinet by Cllr Christine Bayliss that the RDC , which owns the two buildings in which the nurseries currently operate, is considering what options are open to it.

As a grandfather with 5 grandchildren I know how essential nursery provision is for working parents and their young offspring. I would urge everyone with an interest in the well being of Bexhill and its Community, to think about how these two valuable nursery resources can continue to be used for this purpose.

We all need to help the RDC identify alternative funding sources to enable both buildings to continue after the end of this year. Could this be realised through partnerships with local organisations, sponsorship or could a future town council assist in some way?
