Everyone’s a winner

PERHAPS I. Fox (Gazette letters, July 21) should spend less time attempting to draw attention to himself by making judgmental and controversial comments, than telling people how to spend their hard-earned cash.

I have never spent one single penny on a scratch card nor the National and Euro lotteries, but I know of hundreds of people who have a weekly flutter.

Perhaps Mr Fox has never enjoyed nor aspired to having pipe dreams, but millions of people weekly get both fun and pleasure when checking to see if their numbers have come up in one form or another.

Added to that, Mr Fox should take note of the substantial amount of lottery grants that fund national sport and recreation facilities for all.

Winning the lottery is apparently a one in 14m chance, but the majority of players are well aware of that and play it for a bit of fun.

In reality, one doesn’t have much of a percentage chance of winning a Christmas raffle or prize draw, but you still do the decent thing and buy some tickets, nonetheless.

Personally speaking, I am a percentage player and do not gamble at all.

But, I equally do not judge people who enjoy a flutter or three in moderation.

As for describing the lottery as being evil, given the scheme of things and taking life’s bigger picture into account, I cannot think of a more inaccurate and absurd word to apply to something that gives pleasure to millions and which funds so many national and community-based projects.
