Export and not import is the key

When I elected to join the common market in 1975, I was under the impression that we would get technical and mechanical goods (such as clocks, weighing machines and other appliances) from Germany, clothes from France and electrical appliances would all be British manufactured, as per usual. None of these arrangements have materialised.

Almost everything seems to come from China; which I presume is not in the EU!

Our British retailers (the ones who are still trading) seem surprised that their profits are falling because of lost custom. Has it occurred to them to bring back the factories they have established in China and other countries to the UK, and thereby giving employment to factory workers here?

It would be very nice to see the words ‘made in Britain’ on commodities again.

Food manufacturers seem to be thriving, which is hardly surprising as they have to manufacture the goods they sell closer to hom.

I notice M&S is closing some of its clothing departments and enlarging its food stores. It is a shame they have not though of the reason why the clothes are not selling while the food is.

If the government wants to get out of debt and not try to solve the problem by cutting back on every service they can think of, their motto should be ‘export and not import’.
