Extra money claims are false

One of the main arguments being put forward by the Brexit campaign is that the UK will have all the money that is currently paid into the EU available to be used in the UK and that this will be extra money that we don’t currently have available to spend. This is incorrect. To take an analogy, a club has been set up which you wish to join.

The fee is £1 per week.

The argument goes that if you leave this club you now have £1 extra each week to spend on yourself.

However, your mother (called Maggie) negotiated a reduction in your weekly fee to 75p per week.

So you already have this 25p to spend on yourself, all that you will have extra is 75p and not the claimed £1.

Further to this, the club also gives you 60p to spend on yourself.

Yes, this was your money in the first place but if the club doesn’t give you back this money then you need to find it from your own resources, meaning that in reality you no longer have 75p extra to spend. All you have is 10p.

Unfortunately, you still want access to certain club activities.

You won’t get this for free, it will cost you 9p. This leaves just 1p as the amount that you will have extra to spend on yourself (please note that all figures are for explanation purposes and are not meant to resemble any actual amounts).

This may sound like a bargain but what have you lost? As a full member you have a say in how the club is run and where it is headed.

As an outsider you are still paying a fee but you now have no input into the club and have, at best, a minimal extra amount of money to spend on yourself. As I said previously, there may be arguments for leaving the EU but the claims that the UK would have all this extra money to spend are false.
