Fabulous events

There was a variety of music and events on stage that appealed to a whole cross-section of society, all of which were free of charge but with an option to make voluntary contributions.

During these difficult economic times, it was great to see that whole families could attend these festival events without having to worry about the expense (not everyone can afford to pay for the events in the castle, which were also excellent).

This year the stage was moved to face upriver, which worked very well, the bar area was redesigned and was again superbly managed by the Red Lion.

The inclusion of a separate children’s area adjacent to the Norfolk Centre was another good idea.

The final night’s Arundel’s Got Talent was quite amazing and far better that I was expecting. I do not think the organisers could have done more to produce a fabulous 10 days of festival events that should encourage visitors to flock back to this wonderful town.

I also witnessed the clearing-up activities on Tuesday, when the Red Lion staff were hosing down the ruins where the bar had been located. Everything had been thought of.

However, one person in Martlets Court did her very best to spoil this festival by complaining about the noise from Jubilee Gardens, in particular spoiling the enjoyment of hundreds of people on Sunday lunchtime when, following her complaints, no music could be played for at least two hours.

I do not know why, in a democratic society, the wishes of one person can override the wishes of hundreds. This lady is a frequent complainant to the press about the Jubilee Gardens aspect of the festival and both West Sussex and Littlehampton Gazettes have published her letters in the past.

I am a retired Arundel resident and myself and my family, some of whom travelled down from Manchester again this year thoroughly enjoyed the Jubilee Gardens events. My wife and I also volunteered for front of house duties for Drip Action Theatre and we volunteered for two events at the castle.

Well done to all involved with the festival, long may it continue.
