It was a very wet day and unfortunately the girls were not able to wander around the beautiful gardens.

However there was plenty to do inside! The girls looked at the amazing mosaics in the north wing and marvelled at the intricate designs.

As they walked from room to room, they were able to appreciate the size and grandeur of the palace and get a feeling of what it would have been like to have been a guest at such a splendid house.

A highlight of the day was the workshop. The girls had the opportunity to write their name using Roman letters on a wax slate, design their own mosaic, use a spindle to make yarn and construct a Roman roof.

The girls were dressed up in costumes and it was really interesting to learn about the different types of clothing worn by the rich and poor.

They were surprised at the length of a toga and were fascinated to see how it was worn. They were astonished to hear that if they had been living in Roman Britain they would be married off by the age of thirteen!

Despite the rain, it was an enjoyable day and the girls learned so much from their hands-on experiences.
