Several recent studies have shown that there are clear benefits to undertaking physical exercise during and after treatment for cancer.

Benefits can include improved physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Patients may also feel that they are regaining an element of control over their lives and are making a positive contribution to their own recovery to complement the treatments that they are undergoing, but over which they have little or no control.

Although aware of the potential benefits of physical exercise, some cancer patients may be reluctant to join a gym when they are undergoing treatment, fearing that they will be intimidated by super fit people heaving massive weights around! This is where My35 and the Olive Tree can help.

My35 is a light and airy space with a friendly, supportive and non-competitive atmosphere. Fitness programmes at My35 use the ‘Milon Circle’ which provides a total body work out with six strength machines and two cardio units. Participants only need train for 35 minutes twice a week in order to see improvements in both strength and fitness.

Staff at My35 are trained and experienced in working with people with cancer as well as other conditions such as stroke and so will ensure that workouts are tailored each individual. My35 have joined forces with the Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre in order to offer this fantastic opportunity to local people in Horsham and Crawley affected by cancer.

The Olive Tree Cancer Support Centre in Crawley is a small charity, funded entirely by donations, which provides a wide range of services to local people affected by cancer. Services include complementary therapies such as massage, reflexology and acupuncture in addition to counselling, coaching, support groups for specific cancers, a singing group and the much acclaimed ‘Cancer Survivorship Programme’.
