Flying to the rescue

I WOULD like to thank the staff of Animal Magic, Littlehampton through your letters page, for the help and peace of mind given to me when, on Thursday, I was presented with a dilemma which at the time I didn’t know how to resolve.

I woke up in the morning to find two fledgling blackbirds on my lawn, my pet cat sitting there, watching them. They had obviously fallen from their nest and the cat had picked them up and dumped them in my back garden. One of the birds had a broken leg.

I spoke to the proprietor of Animal Magic, explaining my dilemma of not knowing what to do with the birds, and he kindly suggested I should bring them to the store and he would contact a lady who looked after such orphans and, if necessary, would hand rear them.

This I did, and, to cut a long story short, the lady did take them in. The last I heard the fledglings were doing fine.

I wonder whether in a similar situation, readers of this letter would know what to do. There are many possibilities, but I think I took the right course of action.

Fledglings in this situation would face many dangers, not the least from cats and other predators. As for my cat, she did the birds a good turn by bringing them home to me, as she could easily have killed them.

I thank the staff of Animal Magic again for helping me out in my awful dilemma and especially thank the lady who took them in and is looking after them so well.

G. A. Harris,

Armada Way,

Littlehampton
