Garden bonfires cause misery

Despite the present weather the first balmy days of spring will soon be upon us.

What a pity it is that this wonderful time of year will be marred, as usual, by the carciginous stench of garden bonfires lit by those who seem to wait for the first pleasant day.

There are alternatives to burning, such as shredding and composting or using household refuse sites.

However, these garden arsonists seem to derive selfish pleasure from driving their neighbours indoors to escape the billowing clouds of noxious fumes.

The fact that some of their neighbours may be asthmatic or suffering from other lung conditions, seems to be a matter of complete indifference to them.

Yours faithfully, John Haddock, Castle Street, Winchelsea.
