The afternoon of Wednesday May 8 was a truly memorable occasion for Mrs Newbold and a number of year 3 and 4 girls who visited Steyning Grammar School to participate in a Locality schools football tournament.

After a number of lunchtime training sessions the girls were keen to take part but were uncertain as to how well they would do. On arrival there were plenty of nerves but these quickly settled as they took part in training led by Steyning Grammar School’s sports leaders. This was shortly followed by a very closely contested tournament.

Upper Beeding won their first match against a side from Steyning Primary School decisively with goals scored by Megan Carey and May Essam. All the girls played brilliantly and every one got stuck in. This gave the team confidence because greater challenges lay ahead.

The second match was against a very good side once again from Steyning Primary school. It was a close match with lots of opportunities for both teams and some wonderful defense, noticeably from Carmen O’Kang. In the second half Beeding’s team work, communication and general fitness shone through, with two late goals scored by Megan.

The final match was against Jolesfield Primary School, another strong team. Everyone felt nervous as much was at stake; the game was truly end to end. Goal keeper Lois Redfern made an important save and there were a number of heart stopping moments with corners, free kicks and near misses before Beeding prevailed in the last moments of the match with some amazing passing between May and Megan leading to a fantastic goal scored by Megan and at last victory!

The experience of Megan Carey and May Essam shone through however this was a real team effort, with each girl playing their part and being a fantastic team member. Well done to every one involved including Lois Redfern, Rebecca Tyler, Poppie Burgess, Lizzie Cowen, Libby Cleaves, Lauren Salter, Carmen O’Kang, May Essam and Megan Carey.

Let’s hope this is the first of many future sporting successes!
