Glebelands hosts science challenge

This event saw over 400 students from Years 1-6 from our local primary schools compete to produce the best package to deliver a single Pringle crisp, through a very untrustworthy internal posting system! Year 7 and 8 students from Glebelands School pupils also had the opportunity to compete in an inter-form challenge.

The challenge was for the pupils to make a package that would be able to stop the Pringle from being broken and arrive intact. The clumsy postal company were in charge of the delivery and subjected the packages to extraordinary amounts of stress. The pupils had a limited budget in order to buy materials for the task and had to make the package as lightweight as possible and as small as possible. We saw a huge array of different packages produced with varying amounts of success, some having crumbs left while others preserving their snack perfectly. The students really enjoyed the opportunity to do some hands on science, and waited with baited breath to see if there snack had survived. The school hall had a real buzz about it as the students completed the task, ably assisted by Year 9 pupils from Glebelands School.

As Glebelands School is a Science and Mathematics Specialist College we take the promotion of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects very seriously, and find this a great experience to give pupils the opportunity to carry out some experiments that they may not get to do on a day to day basis in their school; hopefully inspiring some of the future generations to take a real interest in the field of Science and Engineering. It was a real pleasure to see all the local primary schools take part.
