Great Cornish Pasty Bake Off raises £400

Around 55 residents of Maplehurst and Nuthurst attended the event at the Black Horse Inn, in Nuthurst Street, with 18 competitors entering 53 Cornish pasties.

Maplehurst resident Sarah Turner, who organised the event with the help of Diana Barden,said: “It was tremendous. People were pouring into the pub and eyes were popping out looking at the pasties that were being brought in, and it was a really lovely evening.

“There were people that do not normally come to our pub that had heard about the event and they came along.”

The winner was Val Sutlies, with second place going to Fiona White.

The three judges were Sam Norgate, Helen Lusty, and Jukka Koskela.

The pasties were then raffled off with the highest bid for Val’s champion pasty reaching £50.

Sarah organised the event after putting together a music evening last year in aid of charity Dreamflight at Sedgwick Park House.

“A lot of people then said they would like to get involved and since I’m Cornish and a friend who moved into the village is also Cornish, we decided since the Great British Bake Off has had so much success why not do a Great Cornish Pasty Bake Off?”

She is also a trustee of the charity, which she says offers children a ‘real life-changing event’.

They also organised a Cornish-themed quiz.

Sarah thanked landlord Brian Denton for hosting the event at the Black Horse Inn.

She added: “We are talking about doing a lot more bake offs, a hot cross bun bake off, a cup cake bake off, and a curry bake off.”
