Great interest in outcome of plans

The proposed regeneration of the old Observer building in Cambridge Road seems to be topic of the moment with local people, especially those living near the site.

We all who are a part of Hastings (I have worked in Hastings for over 10 years) are understandably concerned that this iconic old building should be restored and especially the wonderful facade that in the current way of things would cost millions to build now.

I am sure that the developers have a plan to make full use of the current edifice and as a very substantial structure they can build on that and utilise its every possibility for regeneration and of course profit. I would be surprised that the ‘newer’ ugly brick addition currently seen on the top of the older part of the building is left in situ as even now it is somewhat an eyesore, placing a structure on top of this I feel would be cheap alternative and an architectural error.

The plan to accommodate almost 300 students within the proposed new premises must I am sure make the blood of local residents run cold.

The area already has a fair level of noise pollution especially at night so although we want to welcome people to the town we must also take into consideration those who are already there and possibly being put out by current disturbances. Parking in the area is already a problem and with an influx of visitors and users of the building I would imagine that there could cause a few headaches all round.

On the other hand, I would imagine that if the local council in its wisdom does allow planning permission, I would think that income to its coffers generated by the building’s occupants would be very hard to ignore, especially as current requests for a pedestrian crossing in Cambridge Road, the replacement of two bollards on the dangerous corner of Cornwallis Gardens/Cambridge Road junction and enforcement of the speed limit on such a busy highway seem not to be affordable.

We await with great interest to see what the outcome of the proposals are.
