Handcross Park goes green

The pupils of Handcross Park spent an exciting day being eco-friendly on Tuesday, June 25.

Already a Silver Level Eco-School, the School is now working towards the Green Flag status with an aim of inspiring children and showing them that being eco isn’t dull.

With members of the School’s Eco Council leading the way, children aged between 4 and 12, took part in a range of activities - all with an eco message.

These included: planting insect-attracting sunflowers, various art projects using recycled materials and a tree trail around the school grounds. There was even a themed lunch to illustrate the reduced electricity/food miles message along with leaf shaped biscuits.

One of the highlights of the day was a visit by Thomas Hill, the Woods Ranger at The National Trust’s Nymans Gardens, Handcross.

Thomas spoke to the children about the charcoal making project they are engaged on at Nymans which, by using local woodland timber, is in stark contrast to charcoal supplies from the rainforests.

He also presented the school with a tree which has been planted within the grounds.
