Now facing criticism for not consulting the Queen in advance over choosing the name Lillibet for their baby girl, it seems that Meghan and Prince Harry just can’t win.

Surely the choice of the Queen’s childhood nickname was a compliment, an attempt to heal the breach with the royal family?

Announcing the name as a fait accompli: wasn’t this meant as a surprise intended only to please the baby’s great-grandmother?

My own reaction was that it’s a nice mane in itself, and one which could be shortened prettily to Lily.
