Help Land Girl memorial project

THE year 2014 will bring many occasions for commemorating the sacrifices and losses in the First World War, as well as those in later conflicts.

It therefore seems an appropriate time to remember others who made a direct contribution to our country’s total ‘war effort’ - the many young women who served in the Women’s Land Army and Women’s Timber Corps.

My late wife, Christine, was one of those ‘land girls’ who worked long hours in difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions (a lot more arduous than my almost contemporary service in the Royal Artillery).

To commemorate and honour these many unheralded acts of service throughout the UK, the Women’s Land Army Tribute project has been established by Staffordshire Women’s Food & Farming Union, with the aim of raising enough funds to make a permanent memorial, in the form of a statue incorporating a Land Girl and a Lumber Jill, at the National Memorial Arboretum, Alrewas, near Lichfield.

The Arboretum is a charity run by staff and volunteers, part of the Royal British Legion, and receives some 300,000 visitors a year. Over 200 special events are held there annually.

Contributions to the project are already flowing in, but more are needed.

It is well organised and I believe worthy of your readers’ whole-hearted support.
