Hold-up in roadworks

The unbelievable delays we motorists have to endure is getting decidedly worse.

These past few weeks, for example, has seen long traffic delays in the Silverhill area, due to the closure of Sedlescombe Road South.

Now none of us would complain about a road surface being repaired but what irritates us all is to see no one actually working on site.

The same goes for the new Bexhill Road bypass and the Hastings Pier.

I stopped and had a look at the pier this morning and at 10am there was some 12 men all standing around doing nothing. Why?

In my younger days, before retirement, I was the managing director of a well-known high street name and I can assure you that if a contractor performed like the ones we have seen on the pier, or at Bexhill Road or more recently at Sedlescombe Road South, I would have booted them out or fined them heavily.

Under legislation referred to as liquidated and ascertained damages contractors are allowed to apply for a job to be extended in time provided that they can justify the circumstances which will stand up to investigation.

I don’t know about the rest of our town but I am sick to death of the paltry excuses we get about the pier, about Bexhill Road and no doubt the same thing will apply with Sedlescombe Road South.

Where is the tough boss we used to get years ago who would soon give you a kicking if you sat down on the job?

Is there no supervisor working on the pier for example? The frustration grows doesn’t it?
