All Co-operative Food stores were tasked with raising money for Carers Trust after it was selected as the business’ Charity of the Year for 2013.

The North Parade team managed to bank £1,870 by organising a range of events and collections throughout the year, and when all the cash was counted, the store was revealed to be the highest earner in the area.

The money will allow Carers Trust to provide desperately needed breaks, information, advice, support and services for the nation’s hidden army of young adult carers. An estimated 500,000 14-25 year-olds in the UK care for a family member or friend who are ill, frail, disabled or have mental health or addiction problems and cannot cope without their support.

The Co-operative’s fundraising has already enabled Carers Trust to announce the first tranche of grants to a number of Carers’ Centres across the UK.

Lester Pratt, Operations Manager for The Co-operative Food in Horsham, said: “The teams in my area have done a fantastic job putting the fun into fundraising, and I’d like to congratulate them all. However, special thanks go to the team at North Parade who have shown commitment and dedication to come out on top in our local charts.

“None of this would have been possible without the continued support of our customers, so we must extend our appreciation to them, and assure them that their donations will make a real tangible difference to the lives of young carers.”

UK wide, The Co-operative Group has raised over £6million during its year-long charity partnership with Carers Trust.
